abstract
Al-Ghazali is the most brilliant opponent and supporter of Islamic philosophy. For example, in his book Tahafut al-Falasifah, al-Ghazali presents twenty statements that he tries to prove wrong. Seventeen of them give rise to heresy because they are considered to deviate from the original teachings, namely the Koran. And, three of them actually prove what he categorizes as unbelievers, with even more serious accusations.
In an effort to defend Muslim philosophy and philosophers from attacks by ulama, especially al-Ghazali who said that "philosophy is the enemy of religion", Ibn Rushd, among other things, emphasized that there is no conflict between Islam (religion) and philosophy. The task of philosophy is none other than thinking about existence to find out the creator of everything that exists. When al-Ghazali said that philosophy can make people commit heresy and kufr, then according to Islamic law it must be punished by death, but Ibn Rushd argued that philosophy is not contrary to Islam, in fact Muslims are required or at least encouraged to study it (wajib or sunnah ).
